Cloth Of Words

Motilal Jattan’s art series, “Cloth of Words,” is a powerful exploration of the personal attributes essential for thriving as a Black man in modern America. Each piece in the collection is meticulously crafted using fabric, hemp, ink, wood, and yarn, creating a tactile narrative that resonates with resilience, strength, and wisdom. The series weaves together words and symbols embroidered or painted onto fabric, each representing qualities like perseverance, dignity, courage, and unity. Hemp threads and yarn are interlaced with the fabric, symbolizing the interconnectedness of these attributes, while wooden frames add a grounding element, reflecting the solid foundation needed to navigate life’s challenges. The ink, sometimes bold and sometimes faint, mirrors the varying intensity of the struggles and triumphs faced daily. “Cloth of Words” not only serves as a tribute to the Black man’s enduring spirit but also as a visual manifesto for empowerment in the face of adversity.
